A new paper published in Oryx examines the conservation challenge for the Sumatran rhinoceros. Three of the five rhinoceros species have been designated as Critically Endangered. The Vietnamese rhinoceros was distinguished from its island cousins by its size. Javan rhinoceroses have a single horn and skin folds similar to that of the Indian rhinoceros. Only the Javan rhinoceros population can be saved in Ujung Kulon National Park. The Vietnamese rhinoceros suffered both large-scale habitat loss and poached wildlife. Last year, 333 rhinoceroses were slaughtered by poachers in South Africa alone. Recently, the rhinoceros has made a new appearance in the news. Only 22 dung samples were collected from Cat Tien National Park, the subspecies’ final stand, but all had been collected by the same person. The subspecies is the last remaining Javan rhinoceros on the Asian mainland. Poachers killed the world’s last Vietnamese rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) in 2009. The rhino population in Vietnam has been declining for many years due to poaching and habitat loss. The last rhino in Vietnam was killed in April of 2010, making the species extinct in the country. Despite its lack of medicinal value, the rhinoceros horn contains a large amount of keratin, which is primarily found in human fingernails and hair. Due to a scarcity of its horns, the Javan rhinoceros has been declared extinct in Vietnam. Only 35 of the critically endangered species survive today. A single park is likely to be the only place in Indonesia where the third subspecies still exists. This is the second subspecies of Javan to go extinct.
